I gotta assume she’s lying to Clair about not having read it – on page 370, Pepper finds the book open halfway after Chloe got it from the bookshelf herself in his absence. I highly doubt she retrieved it and got comfy in the conversation pit just to sit in boredom. Chloe’s not stupid, I think she recognizes the way the story parallels her own experience (hell I read it myself and had a couple jaw-drop moments at the correlations lol like “John says the very worst thing I can do is to think about my condition”), and I think she recognizes she should be cautious of admitting to Clair that she’s reading it, even if outwardly she would rationalize that lie as not wanting to give Clair the satisfaction that she’s doing something like reading a book https://halo-head.com/theme-assets/chloe-sit.png
LET HER READ THE BOOK 🗣📢

Clair, your spite do be showing off too much. At this point, I feel like Pepper might actually be in trouble if it festers…
