I really find it hard to see how anyone could hate Pepper, he’s managed to stay far more together than you’d expect someone in his situation to and he seems to always immediately grasp when he messes up.

I have pretty similar tendencies to what Achilles has going on, and unfortunately “He’s Autistic” isn’t compelling to me here. Like, he’s clearly aware on some level that what he’s doing is a bad idea, but he’s consciously committing to that wrong choice. That’s the whole point of thought bubble Achilles! There’s a disconnect maybe, but that impulse is still THERE!
His feelings are real too, mind, and that’s steering a lot of the behavior here, but I also think Achilles is a little willfully shitty in ways I hope the story addresses here.
I hope some day Achilles gets some kind of perspective on how much Mars does care and why it really matters that she’s enjoying the arrangement they have, but damn. Another heroic underside journey without warning is really gonna test the notion in the worst way. Like things really can’t keep going on under his current perception, but straight up disappearing again is gonna dredge up some nasty trauma for Mars while also kind of implicating Chloe if nobody ever updates anybody on what the hell is going on and that’s the last time Chloe and Mars spoke right before handing him off.

i have a soft spot for a boy admitting with humility that he is kind of a shlub . one of few boyish traits i can really get behind . also achilles doesnt seem to be fazed by yelling at all – in the past mars has yelled at him a little to little response, and here he seems more unnerved in 593 by being suddenly grabbed than by any vocal escalation

He really just doesn’t know to ask for help like a normal person, he’s either just grossly telling Achilles to go get more money to keep being punched in the face so he has someone to go on a walk on the stairs with, or just focusing on dealing Achilles’ problems.
Achilles is doing his due diligence here by asking about the ‘I can’t go alone’ thing, but Pepper just goes to apologize instead of explaining. I think Pepper feels like he ‘got caught’ acting selfish, even though Achilles probably would’ve cared enough to help him if he opened up.
I think the most normal he’s been about it when he asked Chloe for help figuring out the deal with Clair and the book, but that backfired when Chloe latched onto the ‘figure out’ wording and probably reinforced some of his bad habits.

Idrg how you describe 578 in particular, or the fact that we’ve been watching her have an extended depressed episode over her jealousy of Achilles and Mars’ time together for easily hundreds of pages, as “Chloe doesn’t give a shit, she just wants her plate back”? Outside of Mars and Achilles themselves, she gives the most shits out of the whole cast. She “won” in the sense that she accomplished her nominal goal of getting her plate back, but she clearly does not fully believe Mars about it only being into it for the money and is deeply perturbed over the implications.
The big theme of this little arc was everyone technically got what they asked for — Chloe got her reassurance about Mars not being weird, Mars got to tell Chloe she’s not weird, and Achilles got beat up for money — but they all only got it in name only and are existing the encounter miserable and sad because of their own choices.

this outburst I think is actually extremely good for pepper. I hope he keeps going with his outburst feelings actually, instead of abandoning his thoughts to focus more on achilles. he FINALLY gets to get this shit off his chest, and hopefully he takes the opportunity. two boys doing animal stuff with meat together (coming to grips with the true nature of reality) (he still has time to add the meat)
