I actually do think this could work. the previous page reminds us of mars and chloe’s shared language. this page, mars wants to fit her thing with achilles into the same framework. it’s not gonna convey to chloe the whole relationship she has with achilles, but it is a good shoe in the door for trying to get her to understand the rest. the faces mars is making make me feel bad for her, like their friendship is in a fragile moment right here, and she REALLY needs chloe to understand. which is exactly what pepper was saying
mars and chloe’s friendship also reminds me of men. men are always sizing you up. deciding whether you are cool, deciding whether they respect you. there is always this veneer of macho weirdness stifling things. like “bro, that’s not cool. we don’t do that.” “like no, bro, it IS cool, here, I have to show you-” like “I can’t show my BROS this thing my wife and I like! my BROS won’t understand this thing that is really me!” that kind of shit is stifling. kill your sense of cringe.
