Mars doesn’t have as strong emotional vocabulary but she’s been doing pretty good making room and being considerate of Achilles without advice, she’s so cool and smart
CIRCUMSTANTIAL NOTE: i binged this whole comic the other day and this is the first NEW PAGE EXPERIENCE for me as a Brand New Reader… its very good and i like it. i am looking forward to having it be a pleasant presence in my life and in my rss reader….
Mars’s suspicion may lead her to badgering Pepper to understand what’s making him panic so much. Which may lead to her discovering the stairs next. Probably not, but I so hope that it somehow does. :>
pepper is showing parts of both clair and chloe here. kind of manipulating mars into coming with him, then playing it off real cool with a quip. he’s also kind of striking a chloe pose in the last panel.

I like how she did not need to crawl over the table at him. but it is a good intimidation tactic. “I’ll fuck you up I don’t even CARE that I just ruined the glass pile we spent an hour gathering”
to pepper’s credit, how tf else is he gonna ask for help with something like this? like if there was a reasonable explanation that would be one thing. I guess he could say he fell down the stairs once. it would still be embarrassing tho
Not telling Mars that he’s afraid of stairs – Sensible, avoids spreading information that could tip Clair off.
Giving Mars this flimsy lie when she has clearly signaled that she’s caught on to Pepper’s need to have her go up the stairs with him – Dumb, strains his relationship with Mars without actually hiding anything.
I don’t think Pepper can really leverage his ability to read people to lie well. He can pull this kind of thing on Achilles cause he’s used to ignoring things that don’t add up and he can pull it on Clair cause she’s too concerned with coming off well and being polite to call him out. But give him someone who’s not doing half the work of deceiving themselves for him, like Mars, and Pepper doesn’t lie so well.
