At the risk of referencing some cis-het normative stereotypes, this is the equivalent of a dude spoiling his girl a bit to put off a more honest conversation 😆
I love this page and the next page SO much. This comic has really exceeded my expectations in a lot of ways with the characters’ interpersonal relationships. This situation Mars and Achilles are in is really specific and nuanced, and I can relate to Achilles a lot here.:clair-sad:
Achilles didn’t understand that he could be making Mars uncomfortable by being open about their situation, and he’s both terrible at lying and doesn’t like to. It’s just not in his nature. And he’s bad with social cues in general. So from his perspective, it must be difficult to fully understand why Mars is upset, and it must feel painful that Mars wants to hide it. Like she’s ashamed of him.
But from Mars’ perspective, it’s an embarrassing invasion of privacy to offer up such personal information, a violation. Mars didn’t consent to Achilles telling people. But on the other hand, she never told Achilles NOT to tell people, and why wouldn’t he want to be open about something/someONE that brings him so much joy? Especially if someone asks or if not mentioning it would be lying?
It’s a really difficult situation to navigate for both parties, and it’s startingly realistic. Just… excellently well done, seriously.
And it would be easy for Mars to say, “Keep it a secret at all costs” or to cut Achilles out, but instead she says that she isn’t going to tell him to lie. Amazing character development. There’s obviously some lingering tension, and they have to talk about it more at some point, but this whole situation tugs at my heart strings in a way I never could have expected. :chloe-XC:
Call me shallow but, I didn’t like Mars much at the start, but I find myself liking her more because her design/new fits and facial expressions got cooler :mars-point:
I like how the extra space in her speech bubble is used. like ugh could have been put in its own little bubble but putting it there just says something different.
and the reason they can’t just go inside either of their houses is because that would be admitting too much, even tho it’s literally private
Love the implication that it’s only a secret from Chloe. Pepper’s in on it (and also knows the dual secrets that Achilles is paying for it and also that Mars actually does just like Achilles), it’s right outside Clair’s house and she also knows about it, and Peachy materializes at random. And I guess Mars assumes none of them would mention it to Chloe, either?
