I earnestly need to reread the comic, but from the page alone, it’s a relatable crack in the facade once shes alone, and into a quiet breakdown of tears. Gosh what an emotional maze of good intentioned but still controlling meddling.
the symbolism in the super s chain being a literal never ending cycle, and the drawing itself (and by extension, chloe) being literally walled off from clair. and clair knowing she absolutely ruined that moment.
poor clair. I think she’s genuinely afraid that chloe reading the book will threaten their relationship, but I also read this as she’s upset she couldn’t resist her own nature in the first place. Like “WHY did I do that now it’s fucked.” I feel like it is a mix of both. I feel for her.
I don’t think she is mad for being caught. Maybe she is mad cause she can’t stop being a control freak, as she noticed how close she was to Chloe, just to sabotage her efforts again.
I don’t think the book has a “great secret” inside that she doesn’t want Chloe to know. I think she is just… scared with how things change, and doesn’t want them to fall apart… even more. :clair-sad:

Since the book is about Women Repression, it would give Chloe some hints about how Clair is treating her and why, I guess. Maybe Pepper didn’t get them cause he is more paranoic about other stuff. But ofc it’s really off that Chloe wanting to read a book is something Clair is avoiding. :pepper-shoot:

Even though this is her own fault, you gotta feel at least a bit sorry for her – she can’t control her controlling behavior, so even the act of controlling represents a loss of control.

Clair seems to be the one who remembers the traumatic incident(s), I imagine the weight of that is a constant strain. Of course, she’ll take on that burden, of course she’ll be strong, it’s her job, she has to do this, etc. etc. etc… well, it’s no surprise that she’d want to shelter Chloe from that. To protect her, yes, but what will she view as her purpose without it. Then it just becomes trauma, not a job to distract herself. Clair, I see you!!!!!!!!!!!

As someone with OSDD & BPD, this comic feels extremely accurate for both conditions. Parts of you are trying to protect you and you may not know why, even if it’s frustrating on both ends. Doing something and hating that you did it but you can’t stop yourself from doing it and hate yourself for not being able to change.

On a more relevant note, I really how, although the lights are dimmed, Clair :clair-sad: is still bright for the first three panels; it really accentuates the contrast from when the lights were on when she was there with Chloe :chloe-bored:.
Definitely an understated element of this is Chloe implicitly choosing Pepper over Clair, even in a moment when Chloe is openly frustrated with him. I don’t think that’s the primary motivating element for Clair’s actions and self-sabotage here, but it is quite a relevant point connecting this moment and the Other big moment where we see Clair cry.
Poor Clair… She is heavily flawed, but I’d be a liar to myself if I denied that I relate to her in certain ways… She doesn’t understand that it’s okay to not be able to change or hold onto the things and people around you… But what do I know, I’m not a weird angelic being who can summon people from a simple drawing…
