i imagine that if pepper snaps back to “reality” (relative to halo head town at least :P), then the mars’ paw prints could be marks left where dust had gathered on the stairs. not something you’d normally notice, and thus didn’t appear in the well-lit lower stairs, but are theoretically something pepper is choosing to focus on in this moment to keep himself grounded in “reality”. if mars’ presence helped him do that before, then maybe just EVIDENCE of her presence can help anchor him too, especially with how he’s following her footsteps. like, clearly the footprints prove she went upstairs without a problem, therefore nothing will happen to him if he does the same, even down to copying the WAY she went up the stairs. surely he won’t slip away into existential horrors beyond comprehension if mars very evidently avoided such horrors herself!
but of course, that’s forgetting mars isn’t the only one with cat paws in halo head. this could lead to the immediate horror of the stairs leading straight to ares, or the funniest possibility: achilles :chloe-happy:
When I was little I was so scared of going upstairs at night, but my bedroom was on the top floor of our tall house, and there weren’t lights in the stairs or upstairs landing. I’d make my mom walk upstairs first and follow her, either walking right behind or just led by the sound of her walking up our old creaky stairs. The feeling of relief and comfort going up the stairs into the dark knowing my mom was up there and everything was okay hit me like a truck looking at this page.
