I feel like :clair-cute: is so suspicious of everyone except for :achilles-wonder: that if :pepper-1: told :clair-what2: that the two of them went to the stairs, :clair-hey: would think :pepper-scruffy: was trying to share blame just to be vindictive.
The very small sympathy I was developing for Clair during the last page she appeared in is completely gone.
She seems to have forgotten that Chloe left because she was being very openly manipulative and controlling and she got caught in the act.
Also I noticed that she was acting a lot nicer on the last two pages until Pepper was mentioned. She hates him so much all those attempts at good behavior go right out the window.
I like how Clair looks taller than Chloe in these panels, like remarking her authority.
Also, curious how Clair doesn’t inmmediately trusts Chloe, and also sees her as sus and questions her. Not what I expected. I wonder if she has seen something like this before…
Yeah… i’d been thinking something similar. Her suspicion IS justified. Something sketchy IS going on BUUUUT her characterization/accusation of chloe here is totally out of line. Chloe may be a lot of things, but she’s NOT a liar
Keep seeing clair slander here and it’s genuinely (not literally, that would be lethal) breaking my heart. She’s not a bad person (and you can’t convince me otherwise), she just keeps making terrible, TERRIBLE decisions:clair-sad:
You know SMBC’s version of the fox and the hedgehog? The fox knows many things while the hedgehog knows one thing, but it’s important.
Clair knows one important thing, “Chloe needs help.”. But there’s a lot of somewhat important things she doesn’t know, like how to take the stick out her ass. Seems like it’s really stuck up there.
When has Clair ever given an apology? Not “Here’s lemonade because I should be better than to get into disagreements with you”, but an actual apology? I think her tongue would turn into a slug and crawl up her throat if she so much as tried to utter the words.
Seeing clair accuse chloe of lying when Chloe has NEVER made a habit of doing that really fucking chafes my hide. But sure, Clair’s ‘never done anything wrong’. Just stole Chloe’s stuff the previous night and was trying to keep her from a piece of reading that she thinks would open Chloe’s eyes to her situation
and then when she shows up the next day she goes from being all nice to get chloe to stay put, to being a royal cunt lmfao
[really good update though because oh my GOD this is good tension even if it’s gross behavior]
tbf the thing Clair tried to steal is something Chloe herself stole from Pepper specifically to punish him for making her mad lol, so if Chloe was mad specifically about theft of property, she doesn’t have a leg to stand on! She did it first, and spitefully.
I know it’s the general consensus around here that Clair tried to steal TYW because it’ll make Chloe realize what her own situation is, but i really don’t understand that interpretation tbh. The parts of the story that resemble Chloe’s situation, being put through some bullshit treatment against your will For Your Own Good, are the parts that Clair openly told her she was doing on the first page and which they have been fighting about ever since! None of that is a secret that Chloe needs her eye opened to. The secrets that Clair really is hiding, like the fact that she literally made the whole world and everyone in it and has done so several times, is not hinted at all by the book? And the actual details of the rest cures are the complete opposite of what Clair is trying to do to Chloe: avoid creativity and nature and physical activity. The narrator’s husband wanted her to do nothing at all; Clair wants the exact opposite. If anything, I’d assume Clair was stealing the book either out of pure jealousy of Pepper or because something in it resembles whatever life Chloe was living when The Trauma occurred, not their lives in Halo Head.
Why’s she always sabotaging any potential goodwill before it ever has a chance to form, like she keeps putting Chloe on the spot and retroactively justifying her mistakes as “mistrust” when she plain old was incorrect to try to walk off with the book right under Chloe’s nose, insulting her intelligence and autonomy to make her own decisions in one move and then acting like she’s the one forgiving Chloe for leaving in response to being directly offended by that?
Gang I can’t say I like Clair, she moves bad and wrong
I like the clear motivation that each character has causing every shift in this conversation! 1) Clair is conciliatory like she always is post-fights when she first encounters Chloe, who is still cold because of both the book incident and also what it represents. She insults Achilles when Clair mentions him because she both dislikes him for being a “freak” and because she is jealous that Mars is paying attention to him instead of her.
2) Clair immediately becomes more hostile both because Chloe just insulted her friend who was there for her during a hard time and because the talk that Chloe derides as probably being about “his top ten lacerations” was in fact a moment of Achilles comforting her in a hard time. Chloe picks up on Clair becoming more confrontational, but doesn’t know why, and matches it by trying to end the interaction as “just business” and tells her about Pepper’s request.
3) Clair obviously knows that Mars has been deceiving her but not that Pepper is involved and, most importantly, how upset with Mars and thus not in cahoots Chloe is with the plan of tricking Clair, then accuses Chloe of lying because when Chloe and Mars always messed with Clair together before, and is even more unpleasant because of her own dislike of Pepper souring her mood when he is mentioned. This is in turn even more deeply offensive to Chloe than it normally would be, because it throws the current rift between her and Mars into sharper light and because she started to confide in Clair about being anxious that she isn’t Mars’ favorite anymore, so it appears that in addition to thinking she’s too incompetent to take care of a book and calling her a liar, Clair also forgot about the one time Chloe tried to actually be vulnerable with her. So now, when we started with Clair trying to reconcile and Chloe simply trying to be aloof, now the pair are both seething as they stomp over to Pepper’s.
I really appreciate how much each character’s motivation, relationships with the rest of the town, and personal knowledge underpin literally everything they do! It makes them feel very human and staying caught up very rewarding.
I guess clair thinks that there is fraud going on. which it is, lol. and which is better than suspicions about the stairs. in which case seeing the actually broken skylight will be good, because it will build her trust. but as someone else said I feel like there will be further shenanigans with the skylight and someone looking through it.
just an aside but it makes me wonder how clair would react to seeing pepper in a vulnerable state. like breaking down because of stair-fear.
I’m predicting that Clair is going to see the cracked window and declare that she *has* to do something about Peachy Keen causing so much damage. Then, without apologizing to Chloe confronts Peachy Keen.
Not sure how that’ll play out, but we’ll bet that they’ll need a new method to launder Achille’s cash.
is it just me or does clair’s hair feel shinier lately? like there’s more emphasis on the roundness, and the formations of ovals/circles in the way that light reflects off of it. kinda feels like its in contrast to the jagged shine on chloe’s hair, which means a lot if you buy into the theory that the sharp shapes in that shine may intentionally be stretched and warped diamonds, and the diamond pattern typically has to do with approaching some darker truth of their reality.
actually as i was typing this, i decided to have a look back, and clair’s hair may be shinier thanks to when it rained in 400-401, and subsequently got dampened in 408 where it first shows off the glossier shine (unless its happened before, in which case oops), only to get shampoo’d in 419-420, and dried off again in 424 where its maintained this glossy finish the whole time. (also 351, 357, and 368 for shots of her hair under different lighting conditions, because i must ravenously prove im not crazy by doing something utterly unnecessary like this)
why does this matter? honestly it prolly doesnt, but the difference is there. it makes the round little shines of light on her hair instead conjoin like a chain of beads, for a lack of better comparison. which i point out only because, again, when thinking about how the jagged shines on chloe’s hair may potentially be warped diamonds, it’d be worth pointing out that those theoretical diamond shapes are, in fact, conjoined. so although the stylistic context of the hair shines may be completely different due to the difference in their hair shapes and texture, it still ultimately leads to both chloe and clair having this partial ring of shapes chained together, wrapped around their heads. almost feels like a backwards tiara when i think of it that way.
regardless im probably looking into it way too hard lol. it could just be that its still damp from last nights rain, which now that i mention it… chloe’s hair somehow went immediately back to normal after her bath, just slips right by between page 424 and 425…
People really on Chloe’s hair today for being her usual mistrusting, controlling, paranoid self. But like… she is right to feel something fishy is up with Pepper and Mars regarding money; because something IS up.
Well, the thing is, Clair getting scammed out of a bit of money really doesn’t matter that much, and Clair is doing this instead of trying to make up for her dickish behavior around the book last night. People have gotten up in Pepper’s hair for being inconsiderate to Chloe as a result of his very legitimate paranoia around Clair, and this is a worse transgression towards Chloe by far. Getting up in Clair’s business is consistent, if nothing else.
ASS I DIDN’T STAY OVER BECAUSE OF AN ACTION WAS ENTIRELY YOUR FAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUUUULT. SO WHAT IF PEPPER AND MARS ARE LYING, DON’T TAKE YOUR SNARKY ASS OUT ON ME JUST BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO TAKE SOMETHING THAT WAS MINE YOU INSATIABLE CUNT
usually a clair defender but ooooh my god. Clair. Clair when i get you. oh my god :mars-shout: :mars-shout: :mars-shout: :mars-shout: :mars-shout: :mars-shout:
Someone is feeling petty today.
I feel like :clair-cute: is so suspicious of everyone except for :achilles-wonder: that if :pepper-1: told :clair-what2: that the two of them went to the stairs, :clair-hey: would think :pepper-scruffy: was trying to share blame just to be vindictive.
And the funniest part is Achilles is lying to her by omission
If/when she finds out that Achilles knows stuff he isn’t telling her it’s gonna break her a bit.
:achilles-prrr:
I feel like seeing Clair stare at him from the skylight is going to mess with Pepper something fierce.
:chloe-happy:
Oh my god he’s going to be naked isn’t he
You’d like that, wouldn’t you?
Clair you’re supposed to build trust instead of accusing the only person in town who isn’t involved with dark secrets :mars-middlefinger:
At this point building trust is like, the opposite of Clair’s MO.
It was Colonel Mustard in the conservatory with the candlestick!
The very small sympathy I was developing for Clair during the last page she appeared in is completely gone.
She seems to have forgotten that Chloe left because she was being very openly manipulative and controlling and she got caught in the act.
I really can’t stand her :mars-middlefinger:
always outward, never inward with clair 🙁
Claaaaaaaair:clair-despair:
Clair is so rancid here it is incredible.
Also I noticed that she was acting a lot nicer on the last two pages until Pepper was mentioned. She hates him so much all those attempts at good behavior go right out the window.

Well babygirl is kind of on a roll lately. But I don’t think she’s bad either. I like to think of her as an overzealous white blood cell :chloe-happy:
You know SMBC’s version of the fox and the hedgehog? The fox knows many things while the hedgehog knows one thing, but it’s important.
Clair knows one important thing, “Chloe needs help.”. But there’s a lot of somewhat important things she doesn’t know, like how to take the stick out her ass. Seems like it’s really stuck up there.
If some kind of apology doesn’t happen when Clair sees the skylight actually is cracked I’m so beyond done with her right now. :chloe-bored:
When has Clair ever given an apology? Not “Here’s lemonade because I should be better than to get into disagreements with you”, but an actual apology? I think her tongue would turn into a slug and crawl up her throat if she so much as tried to utter the words.
Oh things are getting real:achilles-loaf:
Seeing clair accuse chloe of lying when Chloe has NEVER made a habit of doing that really fucking chafes my hide. But sure, Clair’s ‘never done anything wrong’. Gang I can’t say I like Clair, she moves bad and wrong
I think she just doesn’t know how to process her own hurt, so it comes out prickly (that doesn’t mean its good just I think i get it)

blaming others for tryna take it all on yourself, huh :clair-sad:
yes exactly like that. good job :achilles-prrr:

My *god* Clair has such a punchable face in that second panel I am seething :mars-shout:
just noticed in the third panel that clair’s eye is more sharp, while chloe’s eye is more rounded. very nice symbolism

Ok so maybe Clair did some things wrong. I’m still not gonna change it because :clair-cute:
Clair and Chloe: *arguing*
Achilles: *spread out on the fort*
