I think they’re a little too thick to be Claire’s arms, so my money is on Pepper. Claire probably doesn’t know Ares is still alive, which is probably WHY Ares is still alive.
It being Claire might make sense contextually, but that color is definitely Pepper, I think, and Pepper HAS dreamt of Ares before (the first night after Achilles showed him the stairs).
oh that is SO cool, i love the fact that the boundaries of this dream like world dont behave like we’d expect from reality. moreso than the defying of physics, but using that malleability to bring about interactions in the world and between characters that would be impossible to happen otherwise (in this sense impossible because pepper sure as hell didnt wander down the world stairs to meet her)
its already been shown and suggested that thought alone can influence reality in this world, but its super fun seeing the creative ways that can happen beyond the act of creation
Also, the diamond matches up with the cutaway of the old lighthouse office on pages 444 and 445 :achilles-onedge:

this reminds me of going to visit clair. the head of the town, you go see her at the lighthouse where she p much always is. except he’s going to see ares, presumably head of another town. he uses the front door and all.
and can’t deny the similarity to chloe’s dream. seeing ares thru a squarish shape. although I dunno what connection that might imply. also can’t deny the diamond, like someone else said. if diamonds are symbolic, I feel like it represents ares’ residence in a new way of thinking, and pepper’s awareness of that place. maybe it’s a scary place to think about, but one that exists in his head now, a place he’s getting more comfortable visiting when he needs that way of thinking.
this is unrelated and assumes something that is just a theory, but I keep thinking that instead of ares being like a combo of (or just lending aspects to) mars and achilles, maybe she is mars and pepper actually. I think it’s partly that I like to expect an unexpected twist, and the red and blue short cats kind of seem natural to combo into a bigger purple cat. but also bc pepper’s pants are frayed at the bottom like ares’ are. and bc achilles really doesn’t seem too much like ares, and doesn’t really offer anything to chloe. but pepper and mars both do. I could see mars’ and pepper’s personalities tempering one another into something like ares’. cool but diplomatic, strong-willed but level-headed.
but again this is assuming the animals’ aspects are somehow recombined from previous iterations or something. the more we go on the less I think they were physically recombined, instead of like just different personality ideas being reused or something. I mean, ares does still exist. mostly.
I like this idea. like as more iterations of halo head are added, things from the past are fragmented but grow to become their own unique things anyhow. & the idea of pepper returning to converse with an earlier being in a stress dream may be part of a deeper desire for everything to become whole again… but it is terrifying. :pepper-surprise:

There’s one aspect I think is shared between her and Achilles:
Achilles really wants people to see his black eye. He wants them to see it and think “Mars did this.”
Ares could’ve at least put a bandage over the gaping wound on the end of her tail. But she didn’t. I think she wants people to see.
