i think i know. her smile isn’t showing any teeth lines or indicators, making it inherently nebulous. her unusually light colored mouth likely doesn’t help this. her smile’s also not wide enough to have her eyes narrow/shut like that to make room for it, but i’m totally fine with waving this point away because expressions being anatomically realistic/making sense can dampen the tone you’re going for at times. i also love when eyes in cartoons go ^^ for no reason its my fav. ANYWAYS that’s my theory. i feel like this ‘off feeling’ the panel has wasn’t on purpose like clair’s open eye one, but i would never put anything past batty and her skill to symbolize Everything in this cawmic. :3
speaking of symbolism, the lighthouse being Ominous As Fuck Red in the sunset is a great touch
