It doesn’t even have to be like that. Human brains have a “hedonic treadmill” that prevents you from maintaining a high level of happiness for a long period of time.
It’s never enough. We will want forever.
It is interesting that this is point of comparison for Here There Be Tygers. Maybe I’m a gullible idiot who would get got by the mommy planet, but I always took it as a Rousseau-ish theme, where Chatterton was ungrateful and valued profit more than this benevolent planet that could give him what he wanted, but he insisted on destroying it because he couldn’t understand the idea of charity and generosity. The idea that it’s a bad idea to have everything given to you is floated and immediately rejected because what you want can include conflict or bad weather, “the tygers.”
I guess it makes sense that the anti-Clairist would be mistrustful of that angle, though! Pepper’s oppositional view of the story is interesting characterization. Charity is suspicious to him now that he knows there’s more to Clair and Halo Head than she admits, which is a little ironic, since his own generosity in both with Mars upstairs and in this very scene has been established to come with some strings, too.
Hard to say for sure, but the petal in panel 4 looks like it could be from the flower he had when he was with Chloe.
The last thing he did with that flower was take off all of the petals in a “loves me, loves me not” fashion, so I wonder if that’s a hint at where Pepper’s going with this story.
Oh hey, the same petals from that twig earlier. I wonder if it’s meant to be juxtaposed with the roses Achilles has been cultivating? The peach tree is “easy”, and seems to grow regardless of what happens around it, but the roses are only so bountiful because Achilles has been constantly tending to them (despite Mars kicking them over)
Maybe it’s just for visual clarity and not on purpose but as far as I can tell the only other time Achilles eyes have been white (proper not off-white) was in #41 when Mars first pushed him. Not including Pepper’s dreams. It’s probably nothing tho.
There is such a thing as *too much* of a good thing
If you get an endless supply of the thing you want whenever you want it, forever… well I can’t imagine you’d want that thing for too much longer.
Without the journey, the effort, the road to get there—it all ends up feeling pretty empty and meaningless—because it is!
If you eat the same thing long enough, eventually it starts to feel pretty tasteless.
Curiously, that’s something that Clair specifically avoids. She makes people work for the things they want, if abitarily.

Pepper’s about to slam Achilles with a metaphorical hammer when Achilles wants a physical hammer. Sadge. :<

would you rather infinite peppers but no Mars, or infinite Mars but no Mars
