OK in all fairness #557 was foreshadowing everything from Chloe saying Mars only did it all for the money up to now, not just this specific moment. However, to have thought bubble Achilles almost directly quoted by Pepper is definitely salt on the wound and it’s so juicy. What’s crazy is I was looking at that page a few hours before this update.
I hadn’t expected the payoff for that to come so soon so I’m really hopeful the Ares drawing gets brought up during this interaction. Maybe it’ll fall out of Achilles’ pocket, lying by omission, something he’d probably feel great shame over however unintentional and then Pepper takes it the wrong way.
This is a similar moment to the “There’s something wierd about me to”, Achilles appreciates things being clarified but hates being talked down to it seems. Unless it’s by Mars of course, specifically when she has her foot on his face.

if it stops making things make sense is achilles gonna ditch the layer again? this stinks bc achilles knows the truth about the things he’s struggling with. like he knows that mars isn’t really doing it for the money anymore. I feel like that’s why this is so upsetting for him, because that’s the vibe he was correctly receiving, and the idea that it’s just for the money flies in the face of that.
of course, the answer to this is better communication between achilles and mars and some stuff to clear everything up between them. but people aren’t that perfect, and feelings are nebulous, so they wouldn’t necessarily even be able to hash things out anyway
Ultimately it’s a matter of “the things I know are true, no one trusts me on, and the people who could back me up are lying to save face”. Achilles really is facing the wall and watching it crumble, and none of this would be happening if Mars was just… more open about actually falling for him.

That’s what’s hard about these coming out one at a time is the passage of time gets confusing unless you go back and read everything in one go. Which is fine cuz that’s how you’re supposed to do it anyway and I enjoy the comic enough to do so. But most times I’m just seeing these as they come out so sometimes I’ll forget details that happened 10 or 20 pages ago.
Spoilers for Genndy’s Primal: kinda reminds me of him killing off Spear because he’d been spending so many years working on the show that he felt it was time to put him to rest. But for the audience who watch the whole season in a matter of weeks are like “well what the hell, that’s it?” Slight tangent but I never had a problem with this choice, I just felt it was anticlimactic or should’ve come later.
But for a daily/weekly comic Batty’s in the same boat as us. Except she knows how it ends. I’d wanna ask her if she’s a gardener or an architect. Probably started as the former but as things got more involved she added more symbolism and foreshadowing. Does she know exactly how all these elements will come back together in the end?
you can really see achille’s frustration at feeling belittled in these shots. it must have been such a pain drawing the house with this perspective, but the camera is doing so much in terms of showing where achilles is coming from here.
pepper towering over achilles while he chops food off screen is a smart way to show off their inability, physically and metaphorically, to see eye-to-eye.
Lil man wants order. For things to be laid out on the table. He struggles with subtlety and metaphors. Things need to make sense. And love? Strong, complex, abstract feelings towards another? He doesn’t get it. He’s in love with her, but he doesn’t understand that. He doesn’t understand why nothing stays consistent.
Brushing off the feelings he’s going through is going against what you wanted, Pepper. You wanted him to think for himself. That’s what he’s doing. And now you’re just pushing it aside? He’s been used as a bargaining chip, rather than a person on various occasions. A catalyst for your lie by omission, Pep. Achilles’ nearing a breakdown at this point. Help him come down before he crashes out.
as someone who’s been in pepper’s position (to an extent) i totally get why he went for the pet. shit’s scary, and achilles is acting out in a way that pepper’s never seen before, so he’s trying to ground them both in what’s worked before to help achilles chill out, but unfortunately that’s not what achilles needs this time
i get the vibe that a number of people in the comments are buying into pepper’s hype too much. he kinda thinks of himself as the adult in halo head, the one who’s always acting logically and chill, but that’s just not true. my man’s just as emotional and messed up as everyone else, especially after the stairs, and we can’t really expect him to always know what’s right, much as he’d like that to be the case. i doubt he’s got much in the way of actual like, psych textbooks, given that halo head seems to be a mindspace; not sure how much of his books are actually physically there and filled out correctly rather than just like, concepts from outside
at first I didn’t catch the callback to what elvm told achilles earlier. about how nothing can be the best moment forever. why would achilles even want that to be the best experience of his life? pretty sure when she stood on his face would have topped that for me. talk about knowing your place in the universe.
also, looking back, you could say it was the worst moment of his life. he was in such a low place that he was going to leave forever and no one cared so much that he got physically assaulted, which for anyone else would have just sealed the deal on leaving, but achilles was so messed up that it changed his entire worldview into some sort of complicated coping mechanism.
